Who among us has never uttered those words found in that great song about unrequited love? Tucked in those lyrics was the thought, “It was too hot not to cool down.” Global warming came to mind when I heard those words. Is there someone out there who knows how to cool down the earth? If there is, let me know. Recently, the Congress introduced new regulations to cut sulfur emissions by coal plants, as if this were a good move. Where is the scientific evidence that such a move will help global warming? In fact, scientists indicate it will only increase the warming of the earth, since sulfur is a product that decreases the CO2 in the atmosphere.
Another contradiction being planned by congress is the removal of CO2 by sequestration from coal plants, an absolutely insane idea that has no foundation in applied science. It’s simply a way to waste billions of taxpayer dollars on bogus science. In essence, trying to stop global warming is like trying to move the moon to restrict tides. The die has been cast making it fair game for every crackpot to claim the answer to stop global warming.
The best we can do is to decrease the amount of energy each person and each nation uses. It is possible to accomplish this realistic goal, which will put off the deleterious effects of global warming for generations to come. Instead, every nation is planning to obtain more energy sources, which only hasten the time global warming will permanently hurt the earth. We owe it to the future to do our part to stem the wrath of global warming. Planning the efficient use of the present sources of energy should be the goal of every person and nation from now on.
Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that producing alternative sources of energy is the answer. It is a scheme to create more energy, not to offset the use of coal, oil and gas. Reducing the amount of energy available is the only way to go. We have the science and knowhow to make this happen, if only we had the will. To be realistic, it must be done using methods that will sustain our life style. It will mean using our intellect to think small rather than thinking big, as is the vogue, especially among the affluent. We need a voice to raise that flag. Our ancestors fought to give us freedom, let’s make a similar resolve to help future generations.
